What garage door track repair costs

Of the 70 invoiced jobs listed on this site, six included track work: three had a bottom track section replaced and three had the tracks adjusted or realigned.

The bottom of a vertical track is where track work usually starts: it sits on a damp floor, rusts from the inside, and the lowest roller is the first to catch. It is replaced as a section, not as a whole track. A door that has already come off its track is a different job, off-track repair; the three kinds of track work are explained below.

Emergency call
$300 minimum
Emergency calls are $300 minimum, which covers the visit and the repair up to $300; a bigger repair costs the same as it would scheduled.

Ranges come from our 2026 price list, set from Jobber invoices and accepted quotes. Each range is for that job done on its own. You get the exact price in writing before any work starts.

Tracks

Straighten, realign, or replace a section

Three kinds of track work

A dent at bumper height in a vertical track is straightened with the door secured, as long as the steel has not kinked. A track that has spread or gone out of plumb, so the gap between it and the door is wrong, is realigned at its brackets. A rusted or crushed length is cut out and a new section bolted in to match.

Replacing a whole track is rare on a door that is otherwise sound. It comes up when the track has rusted along its length, or when a door is changed for one that needs a different track radius or headroom.

Why tracks bend, rust and spread

Impact is the usual cause of a bend: a bumper, a snowblower or a bin against the vertical track at its lowest point. Rust comes from the floor, where salt and meltwater sit against the bottom of the track all winter. Spreading comes from the brackets: lag screws loosen in a jamb that has softened, or a track that was never shimmed plumb works loose over years of the door rubbing it.

A door out of balance adds to all three, because the opener drags it against the track on every cycle. That is why a track repair ends with a balance check and, where the springs are the real cause, a spring replacement.

What the repair involves

The opener is disconnected and the door secured. Brackets are refastened into sound wood, with new lags where the old holes have stripped; a dented length is straightened or a section replaced; the track is set plumb and at the right gap from the door along its whole height, and the horizontal track is checked for level and its rear hanger for strength.

Last comes a balance test with the opener disconnected and the opener's own reversing test, so the door runs true and stops when it should.

What you notice

A dent, a gap, or a grind at the bottom

Something hit the track and the door now binds there
Stop before the opener forces it: a door dragged past a dent can leave the track. Note the height of the dent. One at bumper height is the common one, and it is usually straightened.
Daylight between the door and the track, or the door rattles in the wind
The track has spread or a bracket has loosened. The door can usually keep running until the visit, but do not tighten anything near the bottom brackets: the lift cables are anchored there under spring tension.
Rust flakes at the bottom of the track, and a grind at the start of travel
The bottom section is rusting through. Replacing it before the lowest roller catches avoids an off-track repair later.
A roller is outside the track
Stop using the door and keep the opening clear. That is an off-track repair, priced above.

"I highly recommend Eric, we had him fix our garage door few months ago, recently we were having some issues with it. I called Eric on the weekend and he immediately answered the phone, and came within an hour to our place to fix it. I was extremely impressed about how responsive and thorough professional Eric is."
Basharat Sheikh Google Review · Aug 2025
"Eric was able to help me out on a super cold Monday holiday recently. He was able to diagnose my issue and get my garage door working again. Price was fair and he was very good at providing some insight into things to keep an eye on moving forward. I'll definitely keep him on speed dial for whatever I run into next."
Bob North Attleborough, MA · Jan 2025
"Our technician Eric came on time gave a more fair price then we were previously quoted from another company and did the job quickly and thoroughly and now our door is working better then ever (even got rid of that annoying clicking noise we used to have)."

Quick answers before you call.

How much does garage door track repair cost?

Garage door track repair and alignment runs $125-$350 installed. Straightening a minor bend and re-anchoring loose brackets sits at the low end; replacing a crushed or kinked section of track sits at the top. If the door has already come out of the track, that is an off-track repair, $175-$650, because the door has to be lifted safely back onto its rollers first. Either way you get the price in writing before any work starts.

Can a bent garage door track be straightened, or does it need replacing?

A shallow bend, or a track pushed out of line by a loose bracket, can usually be straightened and re-secured. A section that is kinked, crushed or torn, often where a car bumper or a lawn mower caught the vertical track, is replaced: a track bent back into shape never runs as true, and it wears the rollers that pass through it. We tell you which case you have on site, with the price for each in writing.

Why did my garage door track bend or come out of line?

An impact is the common cause: a car, a bike or something stored against the track. The rest come from the door itself. Lag bolts that have worked loose let the track drift, a door that is out of balance pulls harder on one side than the other, and a worn or broken roller can lever the track open as it passes. That is why a track repair includes a look at the rollers, hinges and spring balance, so the cause is fixed along with the track.

Is it safe to keep using a garage door with a bent track?

No. A door that binds, scrapes or runs crooked is one cycle away from jumping the track, and a door that comes off its track can drop or twist in the opening. Leave the door where it is, do not force it or pull the emergency release to free it, and call. Describing what you see helps us bring the right track sections, brackets and rollers on the first visit.
